Interweave
Our
Welcome to Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians,
and Trangender Persons
INTERWEAVE
@ ALL SOULS N.Y.C. is an alliance of bisexuals, gays, lesbians
and transgender persons and their heterosexual friends
at The Unitarian Church of All Souls in New York City.
Since 1993,
All Souls has been a welcoming congregation. This designation
is part of a deliberate and ongoing educational process
designed to make the church more specifically inclusive to
BGLT persons. The entire congregation and its Board of Trustees
voted
affirmatively to be recognized as a welcoming congregation.
INTERWEAVE strives to involve its members in the general life
of the congregation and does not segregate BGLT people from
the church's larger scope of activities. It is a consistent
presence
in the church and provides support to bisexual, gay, lesbian,
and transgender persons.

INTERWEAVE
Activities, Large and Small
|
During the
church year, (the week after Labor Day through the week before
Memorial Day) INTERWEAVE meets on the first, second and third
Sundays of each month
at 12:45 pm following the 11:15 am service and coffee-hour.
Meetings
are
organized
variously around the INTERWEAVE QUEER FILM SERIES, guest lectures,
and topic centered discussions. Programs vary depending on
the interests of the members and offer the opportunity for
BGLT people to socialize and celebrate together.
Following
the Sunday 11:15 service, INTERWEAVE gathers near the rainbow
flag on the information table in Reidy Friendship
Hall during coffee-hour. Small group discussion and brunch gatherings
frequently follow the coffee-hour.
Semi-annual
parties or cultural events have become popular events in the
INTERWEAVE calendar.

The 2004
Interweave Convocation of the Unitarian Universalist Association,
hosted by INTERWEAVE @ ALL SOULS N.Y.C., February
27-29, 2004. Read more about
this here.
Our INTERWEAVE
QUEER FILM SERIES has shown a diverse program of films of topical
interest to members, including most
recently American Beauty, Bedrooms & Hallways,
Brother Outsider, Latter Days, Kissing Jessica Stein,
Chutney Popcorn, Another
Country, For a Lost Soldier and It’s in the
Water. Films are chosen for their
value as entertainment and as catalyst for discussion of contemporary
BGLT concerns. An annotated filmography of over 400 films of
special interest to the BGLT community has been prepared by
the chapter and is available free of charge.
INTERWEAVE members were among those who raised questions about
the church's continued funding of the Boy Scouts. This led
to the development of our own local alternative to scouting
known
as The Navigators.
Adult education
programs have been offered at the church on books of special
interest to INTERWEAVE members,
such as Go
Tell It
on the Mountain by James Baldwin.
Members assisted
at the annual holiday party for the Gay Men's Health Crisis
Child
Life Program held at the church.
The same-sex
marriage issue was the topic of a recent brunch meeting with
special guests
local State Senator Liz Krueger
and leaders from Marriage Equality NY and the Wedding
Party. Future
adult education programs are being planned on this important
topic.
