EDITOR’S CORNER

This end of summer issue is as always, focused on the annual General Assembly of the UUA. About 25 delegates from All Souls, plus many of our ministers, staff members and delegates to the Youth Caucus, traveled to Cleveland in June to exercise our right to represent our Church in helping the denomination determine its path towards the future. The article, "General Assembly—the UUA's 40th Anniversary Gathering," in these pages is an attempt to paint an overview of what some of our delegates experienced, found most interesting, and most importantly, the ideas they brought back to our church. That week at GA creates a sort of exhilaration of denominational belonging and togetherness to those who attend. We have tried to recreate some of these feelings for the rest of you.

This issue in some ways, is not only a bridge to the thousands of delegates in Cleveland from all over the U.S. and Canada, but also, perhaps, to the world at large. Members of All Souls link us to a number of far-away places. The experiences of Leah Hanlon featured in "Who We Are," connects us to the simmering cauldron of the Balkans that has been so much in the news of late, and illustrates how one member from a single congregation in a small denomination can touch people in great need of guidance in democracy. The excerpt from a letter by Ronna Abbott takes us to her effort to make a difference in the world as she takes up her new tasks for the Peace Corps in the heart of Africa. A UU ministerial letter to the White House from John Buehrens concerning the nuclear disarmament treaty, signed by our ministers, is a reminder once again that we and the denomination keep our fingers on the pulse of international events and try to influence them as best as we can.

The rest of the issue deals with some of our own attempts to deal with homegrown problems such as intolerance and social justice, and with in-reach programs that help us understand and interact more closely with other members of our church.
