IN THE NEWS AT ALL SOULS
A REPORT ON SOME OF THE MANY INTERESTING EVENTS THAT OCCURRED DURING THE 2002 FALL SEASON.

WOMENS ALLIANCE On September 26, members of the Women's Alliance and friends gathered for a supper meeting to see a short film titled, "Heroes for the Twenty First Century: Lesson from the Women of Ground Zero," and hear a talk by Leslie J. Calman, Executive Vice President of the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund. This film celebrates the heroic women who performed non-traditional tasks during and after the tragedy of 9/11. They included not only policewomen and fire fighters but also EMS personnel and women working as carpenters and steel workers. None of these women were featured in the general press coverage of the events of that day and the months that followed. The film was shot by a woman working for CBS news, although her work was never aired. In spite of all the coverage previously seen, this film gives the viewer the impression of actually being inside the clouds of dust and in the midst of the panicked confusion. The Fund is planning to show the film for future fund raising purposes. It was a memorable event.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The All Souls Historical Society celebrated its 20th Anniversary on September 27 with a wine and cheese reception during which some of the treasures of our archives were displayed. The Archives hold materials going back to the founding of our church in 1819. This society is the place for history buffs in the congregation. About 50 people attended the party.
FAMILY OF ALL SOULS DINNER
Each year, the church invites members of the congregation who have left bequests to All Souls in their will to attend an elegant dinner party. At this year's dinner on November 21, the framed picture of the All Souls Dead Sea Scroll was displayed along with a picture of Dr. Walter Donald Kring, the 8th minister of All Souls. In his speech, the Rev. Galen Guengerich recounted how the scroll was acquired by Dr. Kring. A wall plaque in Dr. Kring's memory was installed in the sanctuary and dedicated on Anniversary Sunday.
A JUST WAR
For four weeks in November, the Rev. David Robb presented a seminar examining the components of a "just war" theory and how it relates to the war talk so prevalent this Fall. Those who attended understood the predicament of governments as to how and when to involve their nations in wars. It was a timely topic for the Adult Education time slot.
AND MORE JAZZ
A benefit for the Booker T. Washington Learning Center featured the Latin Jazz Alliance and took place at the St. Bernard's School on East 98th Street. This was the third annual jazz concert for the Learning Center and it was a joyous late afternoon event at which members of All Souls and members of the Church of the Resurrection could meet, mingle and enjoy a selection of Caribbean foods. The concert raised $15,000 for the Learning Center.
WOMENS ALLIANCE CHRISTMAS TEA
Good food and sherry enhanced the annual Women's Alliance Christmas Tea party, which was well-attended and during which additional money was made from the remnants of the Alliance Gift Table sales in November.
