IN THE NEWS AT ALL SOULS

BOOKER T. WASHINGTON LEARNING CENTER JAZZ CONCERT
The Booker T. Washington Learning Center held a successful benefit Jazz Concert on October 19 that drew about 125 jazz enthusiasts to the event at the St. Bernard’s School. This fourth annual Jazz Concert with Michael Mossman and the Swing Shift, featuring Antonio Hart, also offered those attending wonderful food, a profitable Silent Auction and the presence of a special honored guest, Edith Washington Charles, Booker T. Washington’s great granddaughter. Many members of All Souls are faithful volunteers and donors to the Center, which provides East Harlem youngsters with tutoring help, after school activities and meals.

WOMEN’S ALLIANCE GOINGS ON
The Women’s Alliance had a very active Fall season. In September, an evening “Welcome to the Fall” party took place and was well attended. At the Alliance’s September lunchtime meeting, Dr. Dale V. Atkins spoke about achieving balance and serenity in everyday life. Suggestions included meditation and concentration on activities one enjoys.

In October, the speaker was Annette Green from the Fragrance Foundation, who told the group about the history of perfume use and about her own move into that specialized field.

In November, two outings took place. The first, a visit to the National Academy of Art to see paintings by women artists, was organized by Susan Arones. Some members also went on a house tour to benefit the American Hospital in Paris.

Finally, on December 17, the annual Christmas Tea attracted a number of new members. This cheerful gathering is always open to all church members and provides a chance for meeting old friends and new ones over tea, desserts and other foods.

FOOD EVENTS: THANKSGIVING, SEDER AND JOHN BUEHRENS LUNCHTIME TALK
Food was, of course, also the focus of the very successful Thanksgiving Dinner and the annual All Souls Seder, enjoyed this year by more than 100 people. These were organized by Robin Bossert and Inez Miller. Food for the mind was provided by a lunchtime talk by John Buehrens who spoke about his views of Bible writings as expressed in his new book and by a Lifelines Conversation with Imam Feisal ‘Abdul Rauf who illustrated the peaceful and tolerant side of Islam. Both of these events attracted large and interested audiences.

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY EVENTS
And in December, a joyful Carol Singing party supplemented the usual caroling on the church steps, the annual Church School Christmas Pageant and the sale of Christmas trees by the Navigators to remind everyone of the approaching holidays.
