COFFEE ANYONE?

If you have wondered why bags of coffee are being sold at Coffee Hours in Friendship Hall, here is the answer: the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) has begun a program to help individual coffee growers in Nicaragua to reap the profits of their own work. To this end, this church, others in the denomination and various non-profit organizations are selling Fair Trade coffee (and also a delicious cocoa mix) some Sundays to a growing clientele. In fact, these products are becoming so popular that orders are sometimes placed by eager customers. This endeavor is only one of the many efforts made by the UUSC to help individuals in developing countries and implement the Fair Trade Law.

Jen Deaderick, All Soul's UUSC representative, recently visited Nicaragua with an interfaith organization and traveled around the country to coffee farms and cooperatives to see for herself how coffee is produced and marketed. Jen was supposed to report on her experiences at a UUSC luncheon in March, but the event had to be cancelled due to a flooding problem in the church basement. Even if you had to miss the UUSC benefit however, you can still support the program by buying a bag of coffee at Coffee Hour.
