EDITOR’S CORNER

As always, the September issue of the Quarterly is mainly devoted to reports from the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly, which was held this year in Long Beach, California in June. We have tried to provide members of our congregation with both an overview of the Plenary Sessions our 22 delegates attended and during which general UUA policy is set by the votes of UUs from all over the country, and a sampling of impressions and facts learned by some of our delegates as they attended workshops and lectures of their choosing. The excepts from their reports show that All Souls delegates looked into many areas of interest and brought their new insights back to share with the rest of us.

While summer is usually a quiet time back here at the church, it also brings many visitors to our summer services and an opportunity to meet people in the setting of a more leisurely coffee (iced tea) hour. And although many church members have been away on trips or at their country houses, a fairly large number of volunteers have continued their missions during the summer weeks. (See the list of summer activities in “Goings On At All Souls” on page 17.) By the time you are reading this, undoubtedly the fall church season will be in full swing.

Those who did spend time at the church in July and August will have noticed that a good deal of construction activity has taken place, mostly improvements to the upper floors of Wiggin House.

Finally, the Quarterly wants to welcome the Rev. Alison Miller as the new Assistant Minister to fill the vacancy left by the departure of the Rev. Jan Carlsson-Bull. Alison is no stranger to this congregation. Here, she grew up, attended church school, led groups and worked in the office before going off to Harvard Theological Seminary. Now, she is starting a promising ministerial career. Her three August sermons were a good indication of things to come.
