GOINGS ON AT ALL SOULS THE WOMEN’S ALLIANCE
The WOMENS ALLIANCE had
a busy Fall season in 2004. It included a cabaret night with song writer
and entertainer Dotty Burman, an evening harbor-sail in September, a special
program
about coping with major life changes with Alliance member Denise Coleman in
October, the annual holiday Gift Table in November and the annual Christmas
Tea, to which everyone in the congregation is always invited, in December.
All of the events were well attended and more than the expected amount of
money
was raised at the Gift Table. The Alliance always donates these funds to
outside institutions. This year the beneficiaries were the Booker T. Washington
Learning
Center and an internship fund at the UUA’s Washington office.
THE 30S/40S FELLOWSHIP
The 30S/40S FELLOWSHIP really
got into high gear this past Fall, arranging for monthly restaurant outings,
day trips, hiking parties, cocktail gatherings, and visits to museums
and concerts. The group also began to organize an outreach effort in behalf
of the Habitat for Humanity.
ALLISON MILLER ORDINATION
One
highlight of the fall season at All Souls was the ordination of the Rev.
ALLISON BETH
MILLER, who is serving our church this year as Assistant
Minister. Alison, who has been associated with All Souls since she was dedicated
here at age three by Dr. Church, was graduated from Harvard Divinity School
and spent her Internship year in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Participants in the ceremony
were Christina Bellamy from the All Souls Ordination Committee, Mary-Ella
Holst who had been Director of Religious Education during the years when
Alison attended All Souls Church School, the Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior
Minister of All Souls Church in Tulsa, The Rev. Rosemary Bray McNatt of the
Fourth UU Society in Manhattan, all of the All Souls ministers and others
who have had a part in Alison’s life. It was a festive and moving occasion
enhanced by beautiful music provided by Minister of Music Walter Klauss.
THE PEACE TASK FORCE
The PEACE TASK FORCE, under the leadership of Hanan
Watson, had a particularly busy
fall season, partly because of the
war in Iraq and partly because of the election season. The group
sent out almost daily e-mail accounts of their programs
and organized a number of lectures, plays, film showings and protest
gatherings during
September, October and November. This
is only a sampling of the activities and programs that went on
at All Souls this Fall. The Soup Kitchen and Monday Night Hospitality
served record numbers of hungry clients, the Young Adult Group
collected
winter coats for the needy in addition to their regular busy monthly
schedule of circle worship services and social activities, and
all of the many other church committees and Task Forces continued with
their regular work. The Lifescapes group had another very successful
Retreat and is beginning to work with Friends In Deed in a larger
in-reach
effort.
