Religious Education Assistant

The RE Assistant is a full year 20 hour (on average) position dedicated to the administrative and logistical support of the Religious Education Program for Children and Youth at All Souls Church NYC. The RE Assistant operates as a member of the staff team and is supervised by the Director of Religious Education. The REA works directly with the MRE and Religious Education Teachers to support the implementation of the Religious Education Program for children, youth, and families.

Required Competencies:

  • Strong organizational skills and initiative in developing organizational systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to children, youth, and adults.
  • Experience and knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, ability to work with database.
  • Good telephone, computer, clerical, and writing composition skills
  • Familiarity with Unitarian Universalism and Religious Education programming preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:
$17 per hour.

Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Director of Religious Education:

Administrative Duties:
  • Provide administrative assistance for Youth and Children's Programs, including copying, mailings, creating and processing forms; e-mail, phone, and mail communications with RE families and volunteers;
  • Prepare payroll time sheets, check request vouchers, program expenditure record keeping, etc.
  • Assist Teaching Teams as needed (supply gathering, maintaining Teacher Folders, communications, copying, etc).
  • Keep and Organize RE records, including database maintenance, attendance records, enrollment, parent participation, and updates to church data systems. Initiate new systems to improve organization whenever necessary.
  • Assist with coordination of RE Volunteers, including processing of Volunteer Job Descriptions, background checks, communication with volunteers, maintaining Parent Participation Database, maintaining Volunteer Sign Up Sheets, etc.
  • Assist with word processing, formatting, copying, mailing, and maintaining RE Web pages and email communication.
  • Maintain and update master calendar of RE Activities, and reserve RE activities on church calendar.
  • Maintain and organize RE materials, RE library, art supplies, including table displays, pamphlet racks, bulletin boards, supply closets, filing, binders, curricula.
Program Support:
  • Supervise setup for RE classrooms and meetings.
  • Assist with coordination of Nursery and childcare, including scheduling
  • Assist with Sun morning program coordination: assist RE Volunteers and families, check in with childcare staff, assist with programs and staff support during RE Session.
  • Supervise setup and support for Parents' Association events.
  • Provide administrative support and reports to RE Committee as needed.
  • Assistance with Children's Worship, Special Mult-generational Programs, or components of Multi-generational Worship as needed.
General:
  • Keep RE Spaces, supplies and storage organized and tidy (does not include major cleaning).

Assistant Music Director

All Souls Unitarian Church in New York City seeks a gifted musician to serve as part-time Assistant Music Director to help lead its vigorous music program.

The Assistant Director of Music supports the Director of Music of All Souls and the Artistic Director of Musica Viva NY in the implementation of a visionary and ambitious music program. Sunday morning worship features the All Souls Choir, a high-quality ensemble of professionals and experienced amateurs, performing rewarding and challenging works by a wide range of composers from the Renaissance to the present. Musica Viva NY is comprised of the same members as the All Souls choir, in addition to a rotating roster of guest instrumentalists and vocalists, and maintains a four-concert season of well-known pieces and world-premiere works. The All Souls musical family also includes an energetic Community Choir. The Community Choir is made up of avocational music lovers and performs periodically during Sunday morning worship. All of the ensembles look to the Director of Music and Assistant Director of Music for inspiration and nurturing leadership.

Ideally, the Assistant Music Director is an accomplished organist with ample experience in concert and worship settings. The church sanctuary features a Holtkamp organ of 53 ranks as well as a Steinway B piano. A second Steinway grand piano in the church social hall is used especially for summer services in July and August, which the Assistant Director of Music coordinates.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will be an accomplished musician and a gifted organist and pianist.

S/he will possess exemplary artistic ideals and great integrity, with personal values resonant with the values of the church.

S/he will be a person open to collaboration and teamwork.

The strongest candidate will be one who combines the above qualities and qualifications with openness, curiosity, and interest with respect to the diverse ways musical expression and spirituality can intersect.

Experience

  • Experience in the role of Music Director or Assistant Music Director and/or Organist of an active church
  • Experience in planning and executing concerts of the classical repertory combining choir and instrumentalists

Education and Training

  • Classical training in organ, conducting, and piano with primary emphasis on organ performance
  • Formal education in liturgical music
  • At least a Bachelors degree from a program of strong reputation
