Development Manager

THE POSITION:

Finding the right Development person is critically important to us. We realize that – unless someone has a vocational call to become a minister – most people don’t grow up dreaming of working at a church. All Souls, however, is a VERY special place. It has a large membership that is intellectually curious, politically engaged, and progressive. This position requires someone who enjoys being challenged to bring their whole self and their full range of sometimes competing talents together. The Development Manager we are looking for will find it easy to build both relationships and systems; will be savvy enough to intuit when to shift back and forth between their role serving the congregation and the need to use her or his expertise to take command of a situation; will be both an optimistic cheerleader and absolutely relentless in the pursuit of helping others understand the need, the benefit, and the satisfaction that comes from investing in enhancing the joy and meaning that congregants derive from participating in this community within themselves as individuals, among the community of All Souls, and beyond our walls as we build connections with the broader world around us. We truly look forward to finding the person who meets these ideas and brings even more to join our strong and tight-knit staff team.

DEVELOPMENT MANAGER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be present and engaged, get to know the All Souls community in a meaningful way. Build internal relationships. Be a trusted, valued, and discreet resource to clergy, the Executive Director, and the Board of Trustees.
  • Consult and communicate in a polished manner with congregants in a way that is inspirational and engaging.
  • Schedule key meetings for the Senior Minister to meet with current and prospective donors; make sure Senior Minister has meaningful in-person touch-points with at least 200 key donors annually.
  • Build on existing fundraising and stewardship programs and develop additional cultivation opportunities.
  • Conduct research on individuals (and foundation) prospects, create donor profiles, and track relationships with major donors and hi-profile givers, including Board and committee members. The primary goal here is to focus on the pool of those who currently give at the median level in order to identify those who have the capacity to increase the dollar value of their annual contributions. An additional goal is to increase the number of households giving at the mid-level by moving individuals up from lower levels.
  • Motivate, train, and inspire teams of congregant volunteers (and key staff) to assist in development efforts.
  • Work with ministerial and welcoming staff to make sure that all newcomers and new members actively contribute to All Souls.
  • Draft and coordinate external communications related to fundraising, including gift acknowledgement letters, direct mail appeals and occasional grant proposals.

Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job as our needs my evolve and change over time.

GOALS AND METRICS:

All Souls has an Annual Giving goal of $1,450,000 for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2018 and ending on June 30, 2019, which is 6.5% higher than the goal for the prior/current fiscal year (from 7/1/17-6/30/18). Professional fundraising consultants have repeatedly indicated that they believe the population of members and friends who attend All Souls certainly have the capacity to contribute as much as $2,000,000 (or more) on an annual basis.

We believe that in order to tap this capacity, however, it is important to engage an active fundraiser who will be dedicated and focused on organizing the Senior Minister, the Board of Trustees, key staff members, and other congregational volunteers to make sure that there is a ladder of engagement and systematic method of tracking of the number of communication touch-points used to encourage donors to feel more valued and necessary for the success of their sacred space.

Our aim is to be able to increase total congregational giving by 15% annually in the second and third years of this new dedicated and integrated approach.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED PROFICIENCIES:

  • Relentless and Cheerful.
  • Intellectually curious and comfortable in the company of politically engaged progressives from the Upper East Side.
  • Eagerness to share competencies with the organization and skill at helping others cooperate to do excellent work together.
  • Eagerness to share competencies with the organization and skill at helping others cooperate to do excellent work together.
  • Unafraid to take calculated risks and able to learn from mistakes.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Relevant work experience, preferably in fundraising.
  • Excellent digital communication skills. Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies.
  • Ability to articulate messages well, both in oral and written communications.
  • Comfort managing multiple projects, tasks, and deadlines.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with complete discretion.
  • Willingness to be present on Sunday’s when the congregation is most active and available.

COMPENSATION:

Salary range is $75,000 to $85,000, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits include 23 days of paid vacation; medical, dental, life, long-term disability insurances; employer contribution to a health savings account. After one year, All Souls will contribute 10% of gross salary to a fully vested TIAA-CREF 403(b) retirement savings account. Overall success in increasing donation growth in excess of the stated percentage increases each year will be rewarded with proportional salary increases for the person holding this position.
